Self-Employment Visa – VISA D7
The D7 Visa allows you to live and work in Portugal, and is granted to people who have their own income and can use it to support themselves abroad. They can be retired people or people with fixed and passive income.
What types of income can be tested?
Income from real estate, profits, dividends, royalties, income from a company, among others, proving that you will have an income of at least 705 euros per month.
What are the main requirements?
- Obtaining the NIF
- Opening a bank account in Portugal with an amount equivalent to 12 times the national minimum wage. That is to say, in case of individual application: the proof must be 8.460,00 €. With spouse: 50% of the minimum wage (352.50 €) will be added to the account. In case of dependents: 30% (211.50 €) for each dependent under 18 years of age. **The money can be moved once the visa has been granted.
- Monthly income of at least €700
- Basic documents such as passport, proof of residency, criminal record, etc.
- One year lease contract or proof of property acquisition.
Immigrant Entrepreneur Visa – VISA D2
The purpose of this visa is to grant a residence permit to foreigners who have carried out investment operations or who can prove that they have financial means in Portugal – including financing obtained from a Portuguese financial institution – and who intend to carry out an investment operation in Portuguese territory.
The visa may be granted or denied taking into account the economic and social relevance of the investment made or proposed. Thus, the fact that a company has been incorporated in Portugal is not in itself a guarantee that the visa will be granted.
What are the requirements?
- To carry out an investment activity in Portugal, including the creation of small and medium-sized companies with economic, social, scientific, technological or cultural relevance for the country.
- Demonstrate the viability of the business, seriousness in the investment and relevance for the country.
- Have a good business plan that demonstrates the relevance of the company.
- Although the investment for the incorporation of a company is minimal, it is recommended to invest 5000 euros for this type of visa.
- Demonstrate that you have the income and means of subsistence to stay in the country for one year, regardless of the income the business may bring in.
The D2 visa does not require the investor/entrepreneur to create jobs in Portugal.
In Portugal, companies can be legally incorporated by foreign partners not residing in the country, i.e. it is not necessary for any of the partners to be Portuguese citizens or resident in Portugal.
Start-Up Visa
Although this visa has similarities with the D2, described above, this visa is mainly aimed at people who want to start up businesses in Portugal with innovative or technological characteristics specifically.
Work Visa – D3 Visa
This visa is intended for people who want to work in Portugal as specialists, managers and administrators.
What are the requirements?
It is a work visa specially designed for highly qualified professionals, but attention: the person must already have an employment contract or a promise of employment contract with a Portuguese company to perform a highly qualified activity.
Employment Application Visa
This visa is valid for all those who want to work in Portugal on a subordinate basis – with an employment contract.
What are the requirements?
- This visa only allows the person who comes to look for a job to stay in Portugal.
- The visa is granted for a period of 120 days, extendable for another 60 days.
- It is necessary to prove means of subsistence in the amount of 3 (three) months of the national minimum wage in force in Portugal, which is currently 705.00 euros, which will add up to the amount of 2,820.00 euros.
- This visa cannot be extended to the other members of the family and does not entitle to a visa for their family members. There is no possibility of family reunification during this period. However, as soon as you are in possession of the residence permit document, you may apply for a visa for your family for family reunification at that time.
- If the person does not find a job, he/she will have to return to his/her country of origin or legal residence at the end of the maximum period of this visa, which is 180 days – 120 days plus 60 days of extension.
Student Visa
This type of visa is granted to students who are enrolled in a course lasting more than one year.
What are the requirements?
In order to obtain a residence visa for study purposes it is necessary that the person has been approved and is enrolled in an institution whose course has a duration of more than 1 (one) year. Enrollment is indispensable for the granting of the visa.
It is necessary to prove means of subsistence and accommodation in Portugal.
Can I work with a student visa?
- The student visa allows its holder to work, provided that the requirements of the relevant legislation are met. It is only possible for higher education students and the work schedule must be compatible with the university schedule.
- Students who have a scholarship and receive government aid cannot work in Portugal and may suffer the loss of the scholarship and the student visa.
