You are a child of German ancestors, but do not have German citizenship? They may be affected by the hitherto gender-discriminatory rules, which constituted an obstacle to the acquisition of German citizenship. On 20.8.21, however, the Fourth Act amending the Law on Nationality created the possibility of acquiring German citizenship by simple declaration within the next ten years. If you were born after the entry into force of the Basic Law (23.5.1949), you could be entitled to declare if one of the following conditions applies to you:
- You are the legitimate child of a German mother and a foreign father and were born before 1.1.1975
- You were born out of wedlock to a German father and a foreign mother before 1.7.1993
- You are the child of a mother who lost her German citizenship before birth by marrying a non-German before 1.4.1953
- Although you initially acquired German citizenship by birth, you later lost it through legitimation when your German mother married your non-German father before 1.4.1953
If you do not have German citizenship as a child or grandchild of one of the above-mentioned groups of people, you could also be entitled to declare.
